March 2021 – From the Top of the World

For all those that shared generously to help build this Abandoned Woman ( with 7 children AND her aged father-in-law) a home in Kalitar, here are the pictures of what has been done as of March 29, 2021 ( donations taken in December).

The falling-down shack is her current home.

The team has taken 5 trips there to maintain the integrity of the project.

All rock is carried by hand from the river about 1/2 mile away and all rock is then hand crushed to make for the flooring.

Cement is mixed with sand and small pebbles from the river to make the bricks and mortar to build the building. Everything is made on the property.

There is nothing that can compare this woman’s face in the first picture and the last picture of her. She now has hope her family can be safe the next rainy season and cold weather season without a building falling on her.

The thatched roofs in this village leak and the people try to patch with tarps that quickly disintegrate.

The picture below is an example of the conditions of the roofs.

Change for Hope is currently collecting funds to roof the 9 worst houses in Kalitar.

Our goal is to roof all the homes in Kalitar that need roofing.  The total estimated cost of the balance of the roofing is approximately $12,000.

Please continue to give as we are continuing our work in Kalitar.

Thank you for your generosity…the work continues….final pictures in about a month…..

February 2021 – From the Top of the World

We met this woman who had been abandoned by her husband in 2019.

Next to her is the home she lives in currently.  Left with 7 children and an ailing father in law she has struggled to take care of everyone. She has been faithful to her family in a country where women, too, just walk away.

Last year we purchased a water buffalo for her to help her start a business and this year we will build her a 3 room house ( each room 10×12).  It will look like the picture above.  When we told her we would do this the next time the team saw her and told her of the support we raised…well you can see how age evaporated off her face as she knew her children would be well.

So little does so much in Nepal.  Thank you for your continuous support.

December 2020 – From the Top of the World

December 21, 2020

I want to thank everyone for their prayers and financial support for this village of Kalitar and its wonderful people whom we wish to serve.

December has been another busy month in the village of Kalitar.

In the last few weeks the village people came together – with smiles on their faces – to help build this outside kitchen while paid workers did the walls, cement and finish work.

“To see a village of people come together to bless others when they themselves are so very poor – is a cry for our souls.”

An outside kitchen 10×12 was built for the pastor of Kalitar. He and his wife and three children will live in the back of the church in a 10×18 room. We were convinced that it would be better to build a small kitchen for her on the backside of the water station we built last month. We were able to pipe in water from the water station directly above a sink. I specifically had two windows put in so that there was an abundance of light as most Nepali kitchens in villages are dark or outside. We also cemented all the dirt area in front of the church building ( also used as a shelter during inclement weather) . Many women labored alongside the men and after 4 days of labor and love the work was finished . The kitchen is very modern compared to what women are used to in the village and all the women will be blessed through it. The picture here is of a typical cooking area for village women…not by any stretch of the imagination a kitchen.

A team of 4 men and 4 women are in Kalitar, today after a 12 hour trip. Much of it was in the dark due to transportation lock downs. They are going to dedicate the kitchen, distribute toothpaste and toothbrushes, have a festive Christmas meal and thank all the people who worked to accomplish these things.

Blankets will also be distributed to the most vulnerable of the 24 homes, if not all of them.

We began sewing classes for 6 women from Kalitar, this in the future will allow them to sew for others in nearby villages and earn an income for their families.

At this time we will also measure out the land that we will build a small house on for the abandoned woman an her 7 children.

We have previously distributed food to her and purchased a Water Buffalo for her last year. She also takes care of an aged parent who will sleep in one of the rooms.

Her land is “wonky” and so we need to shore up the sides slope with stone walls before we can build . There will be 3 -12×12 rooms. I often think of 9 people living in under 500 sq. feet and know that I am blessed to facilitate this work with the generous donations of everyone.

The future plans for Kalitar are more buildings, roofing, a chicken hutch with 20 chickens( for eggs and meat), more goats ( at least 15), 4 fruit trees ( and a fig tree) and other projects to help sustain them and provide future incomes for these wonderful people. We hope to continue to help the local school ( about a 20 min Nepali walk away thru the river) and a medical clinic near the school are out other hopes.

Please continue to donate if you can as the work is not completed.

More information will come the first week in January….

November 2020 – From the Top of the World

On November 12 we completed the delivery of needed supplies to Kalitar.

There are 24 homes in this village with over 100 people. The situation is desperate in these small villages due to covid.  Villagers are unable to travel down the river for “day work” to earn funds to supply their families with the food they need to live and grow so they are forced to scrounge for food in the nearby hills.

We decided to deliver blankets, floor matting, rice, and to build a washing station for the women to wash clothes.

The church building will also be a community center for training and classes.

The only accessible water in the village is good for cleaning and washing but must be boiled before consumption.

One of the main killers in Nepal is dysentery.

Our goals for next year are to run a water line into the village from a spring source up in the hills, this will provide clean water for the village people and bring in more goats and water buffalo which will help the villagers become more self-reliant. We also hope to build an outside kitchen for the minister and his family who plan to move into an 18×12 room in the church.

Everything one does in Nepal helps to encourage people that God wants them to belong to Him and to find that people do care.
